Hello kiddies, I'm back once again to shed some light and (unprovoked) opinions on rock music today. This weekend, I had the pleasure of playing my first show since reuniting with Life By Inches. While I do thank those that came out, I'm here to talk about the headlining act we had the opportunity of sharing the stage, Skip Sushi. This five piece is a varitable who's who of the local music scene, if you haven't seen or heard Skip Sushi, you've no doubt heard about the projects they have been involved with in the past few years. These acts include, but are in no way limited to; Eden's Alley, Deep Shag, Mad City, The Fast Mothers, and even Sebastian Bach. If you missed the show at the Stage Stop, you missed a good one. Skip Sushi is primarily a cover band with some solid originals, I for one, hope to hear more in the near future. The band, which is more vocally driven with unique and strong vocal harmonies, is fronted by Lee Sharp (whose also plays keyboards), and features Randall X Rawlings and Trent Dickinson on guitars, Jimmy Bass on six-string bass, and finally Mike Dover pounding out the drum beats. If you get a chance, visit www.myspace.com/skipsushi and check out their original material, especially "Novocaine" and "Belive Me." Now that you've got some background, let's get into the show. "Always on the Run" by Lenny Kravitz started off this well-arranged set followed by "Crazy" by Seal. Both of these songs, as well as any other song they performed, were well covered and sounded strong, especially with Lee picking up parts on the keys. I hope, in the near future, we get to see Skip Sushi on a bigger stage so that there can be more energy between the guys, that's the only downside I really witnessed in the show. Unfortunately, I had to check in to work at 7:30 the next morning, so I didn't get to see the second set. But if the next set was anything like the first, I know these guys blew the doors off the Stage Stop. If you haven't heard or seen Skip Sushi, give them a good listen and you shant be disappointed, this is definetely a band worth shelling out 5 bucks to see. Finally, if you're interested, you can see these guys at the Stage Stop again on August 4. Discuss this editorial in the Vexar Forums here. |
